FAQ
Not really.
A sizzle reel refers to a video that is flashy and features loud music, fast cuts, but very little substance. They are fun to watch, but about as nourishing as a popsicle.
A Speakers Reel tells a story. It explains:
· Who the speaker is.
· What experience has made them an expert in their field.
· What the audience will get from their talk.
Those are the three questions people need answered before they will book you. They aren’t looking for the sizzle, they want the whole meal. In other words – don’t be a popsicle!
There are three things essential to every great reel. First, we need to show you on stage doing your thing. This is the job you are applying for, so you need to demonstrate that you can do it well. Second, there should be some interview clips: quiet, thoughtful answers that explain the ‘why’ behind the ‘what’ of your keynote. And third, we need to see ‘you being you.’ This might be you working in the garden, playing with your kids, or cooking dinner. We need to see that you are a human being with depth and complexity.
You should create a new reel every other year. In 24 months, your look, your message, and your brand will evolve. You can reuse a lot of content, especially if it was well shot in the first place, but you should feature your latest and greatest appearances.
The rule of thumb is to spend whatever you charge for your talk. So, if you are charging $5000 for a keynote address, then you should budget $5000 for your reel. For some speakers, this number can be aspirational: If you intend to be a $10,000 a night speaker, then you should present yourself to the world as that. It really isn’t that different than your wardrobe. There is no ‘right’ amount to spend on your outfit, only that it should align with your brand.
